I would like to move a Japanese Red Maple about 5 feet tall.

I would like to move a Japanese Red Maple about 5 feet tall. How much dirt do I need to dig up with the tree and how deep do I need to dig. I would like to move this tree now so an answer would be great.

Hi Joy,

To move a tree that size you just need to have a tarp and a sharp spade to dig with. First figure out how large a hole you will need to dig to replant the tree. Dig that hole and remove the soil. Dig the exact same size hole around your tree. If your tree is one inch caliper at the base you will need a 12 inch in diameter hole. Two inch tree 24 inch in diameter hole. Dig down at a slight angle. When you have circled the tree then put your spade as deep as you can under the ball and press down on the handle to lift the tree. Place the ball and tree on your tarp and drag to the other hole to transplant. Just water in well and you should be fine.

Good luck with the move.
